The staff of Caritas Nigeria’s Enugu Regional Office held their annual New Year Retreat on the 7th and 8th of January 2025. This retreat aligns with the organisational culture of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria and the agencies of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).
The retreat was led by Msgr. Prof. Dr. Obiora Francis Ike, Founder, President, and Director of the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice, and Peace (CIDJAP Caritas). The sessions focused on deepening the staff’s understanding of spirituality in professional service, with a strong emphasis on integrating faith into daily work.
The event began with an overview of Catholic Social Teaching, highlighting its relevance in professional and spiritual life. Key principles, including human dignity, stewardship, solidarity, the common good, and the preferential option for the poor, were discussed, setting a reflective and inspiring tone for the retreat.
A notable feature of the first day was the Emmaus Walk, where staff engaged in a guided reflective walk through the office premises. This activity encouraged the sharing of personal experiences and spiritual reflections, fostering mutual understanding and a stronger sense of community among team members.
The retreat also included a Holy Mass, officiated by Msgr. Prof. Dr. Obiora Ike, along with the prayer of the Rosary and a special blessing, providing moments of spiritual renewal and grace for all participants.
This beginning-of-year retreat was a meaningful opportunity for Caritas Nigeria staff to reconnect with their mission, strengthen their faith, and prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead.
