On 23rd July 2026, the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) officially launched the South-East Human Rights Bureau in Enugu, a major regional initiative aimed at strengthening human rights protection, accountability, and access to justice across South-East Nigeria.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Msgr. Prof. Obiora Ike, Founder and Director of the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP), who provided strategic leadership at the landmark event. The conference brought together leading voices in human rights and governance, including Prof. Joy Ezeilo, Dr. Sam Amadi, and Okechukwu Nwanguma (Executive Director, RULAAC), alongside other stakeholders from across Nigeria.
The initiative seeks to promote monitoring, documentation, reporting, and advocacy on human rights violations, while expanding civic space and strengthening the rule of law in the South-East region.
Participants emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between civil society organisations, security agencies, and development actors to improve justice delivery and protect citizens’ rights.
The launch marks a significant step towards building a more accountable and rights-based governance framework in the region.
