Birth and Childhood:

Obiora Ike, born in Gusau, Northern Nigeria, to parents Richard and Lucy Ike of Umana Ndiagu in Ezeagu LGA, is a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu.

His parents served under the British administration, thus Obiora grew up in several cities of northern Nigeria.  The elementary school studies started in Gombe, Jos, Nguru, Kano, and Enugu between 1960 and 1967.

Junior Seminary:

The admission to the Junior seminary for secondary school studies began in 1969 at All Hallows Seminary, Onitsha, then on exile at Ukpor because of the civil war in Nigeria, and continued at St John Cross Seminary, Nsukka, where he obtained the GCE Ordinary Level certificate in 1974, clearing all 9 papers with Grade One. He then did the GCE Advanced Level.

Senior Seminary Formation in Nigeria and Studies Abroad:

Desiring to be a priest, he gained admission to read philosophy at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, from 1975 to 1978. He was sent abroad to the Jesuit College “Canisianum” in Innsbruck, Austria, to continue his studies at the young age of 22.  In Austria, Obiora obtained the bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, the Master’s degree (with distinction) in Philosophy, and the Master’s Degree in Theology and was ordained a Catholic priest in July 1981 at the young age of 25, thus becoming the youngest ever-ordained priest of the diocese.

Dr. Ike studied from 1975 to 1986 in Nigeria, Austria, Germany, France, and the UK, and holds degrees in philosophy, theology, economics, journalism, and political science.

Bishop Michael Eneja encouraged him to continue with two doctoral degrees in Philosophy, Jurisprudence, and Catholic Social Ethics in Theology.  He gained a doctorate degree in both subjects in Bonn, Germany, with a specialisation in Ethics and Christian Social Thought.

He is one of the first priests in Nigeria to specialise in Catholic Social Thought, a study that has seen him add enormous value to the Church, society, and academia.

Priestly Ministry:

As a priest ordained in 1981, Obiora Ike celebrates 45 years of priestly anniversary this year, 2026. At ordination, he tood the motto of St Paul “Omnibus omnia “”To be all things to all People “(I Cor 9: 19 – 23). After ordination in 1981 in Hohenems, Austria, he received his first priestly ministry nd appointment from the Archbishop of Cologne, Germany, His Eminence, Joseph Cardinal Hoffner, and he served from 1982 to 1986 as the first Pastoral Director of Deutschordenswohnstift, a Home for the Elderly and sick.  It was here that he negotiated under the permission and blessing of the Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. M. U.Eneja, to bring the Daughters of Divine Love Sisters and the congregation to Germany for training and mission. This initiative has continued to this day with over 100 sisters working in that country.

He had the opportunity to negotiate the further studies of many priests, seminarians, and sisters from several Nigerian dioceses, beyond Enugu, and also religious and congregations to work and study in Europe.

Upon return to Enugu immediately after studies at the young age of 30 in 1986, Bishop Eneja appointed him as Chaplain to the Holy Rosary College, Enugu, and he served as the Chaplain from 1986 to 2010.  At the same period, he was assigned to priestly ministry under Father Michael Aluma at Sacred Heart parish, Uwani,  where he ministered as assistant priest from 1986 to 2010.  Alongside being the Chairman of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace by Episcopal appointment in July 1986, he sought the permission of the Bishop to register a Catholic Institute under the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in the Vatican, as well as under the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a Church-related Humanitarian and educational NGO.

With the permission granted in writing by the Bishop, Obiora founded on 4th October, 1986, the feast of St Francis of Assisi, his patron saint, the Catholic Institute for Development Justice Peace and Caritas (CIDJAP).  The vision continues to be the promotion of Catholic Social teaching, empowerment of people, Legal assistance to prison inmates, dialogue programs, and development projects.

Under the Bishop, he was appointed director of diocesan projects, a work he gladly carries out to this day.  As Development Director, he initiated several projects, including the Agricultural farm of the diocese at Ugwuomu, where the Godfrey Okoye University permanent site now resides.  He has taught in several institutions as a teacher, adviser, and cooperator of the various Bishops of Enugu.

Over the years, he has served as Chaplain for the Youth, Chaplain to the HRC, Chaplain to the Diocesan Catholic Women organisation from 1987 to 2003;  An assistant priest at Sacred Heart parish, Uwani. Bishop Anthony Okonkwo Gbuji appointed him Episcopal Vicar for Pubic Relations and made him Vicar General of the Diocese in 1998.  Pope John Paul II. elevated him to a Papal Chamberlain in 1999 as the youngest Monsignor in Nigeria at the time.

On the provincial level of the Onitsha Province, Ike has served as the Chairman of the Justice of Peace of 13 dioceses for over 10 years nd has worked at the catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, both as an expert of the Bishops conference of Nigeria from 1987 to 2003 and as a member of several committees, including the Caritas Council of Nigeria.

In 2010, Bishop Callistus Onaga appointed him the parish priest of St Leo the Great, Federal Housing, Trans Ekulu Enugu, from 2010 to 2016, when he left the country to serve as the Executive Director of the largest Ethics foundation globally, on an International Mission at Globethics in Geneva, an ECOSOC Member of the United Nations.   Upon return in 2023, he was reappointed to head CIDJAP and continues as the diocesan projects coordinator.

Academics

He has written over 100 books, journal contributions, monographs, and edited works on topics related to Ethics, Education, Culture and Society, Church and Development, State and Governance, and Spirituality.

He started his teaching career in Cologne, Germany, at Deutschordens Fachseminar as Philosophy and Ethics lecturer from 1980 to 1986, and worked as a visiting Professor in 1993 at the Theological Faculty, Tilburg, the Netherlands.

In 1997, he became a full Professor at the Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany, and in 2010, he moved to Godfrey Okoye University, Nigeria, as a Professor of Ethics and Intercultural Studies. He was the first director of the Department of International Studies at The GOU.

Obiora Ike has served in governing councils of 5 universities globally, first at ESUT; then at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, Executive Management Programs for 12 years.  He serves on the Board of Trustees of Godfrey Okoye University and, in 2021, was appointed to be Prochancellor and Chairman of the Council of Plateau State University, Bokkos.  Currently, since 2023, Enugu State Government under Gov Peter Mbah appointed him as the Pro-Chancellor of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, SUMAS.

Services to the State and the Global Community

Obiora Ike has served as a bridge builder between Church and State and has assisted the Church in building networks and good relations with government and secular factors.  He led the team for the return of Catholic Schools under Governor Sullivan Chime in 2008. During the National Conference. Governor Sullivan Chime nominated him to the President Jonathan initiative for peace building and the drafting of a new Constitution for the Federal Republic in Nigeria, and he served as deputy leader of the South East contingent to that conference in Abuja in 2014.

In 2015, the government of HE Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi appointed him Chairman of the Enugu State Government Economic Advisory Committee. He served as CEO and Executive Director of the Geneva-based leading Foundation for Global Ethics “Globethics.net” in ECOSOC Status of the United Nations from 2016 to 2023, and currently sits on the Board of the Foundation in Geneva. Widely travelled to all continents and over 170 countries, he is President of the Club of Rome, Nigeria Chapter, as well as a member of the European Academy of Science and Arts and the World Academy of Science and Arts.

During the Synod of Bishops on Africa on the theme of Justice and Peace at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Msgr Obiora Ike to the Synod as a representative of the Holy Father and expert.  He was the secretary of the English-speaking global participants. Prof Ike speaks and understands 11 languages and is a well-revered public speaker, advocate for justice, human rights, and dignity beyond the shores of Africa.
