The Founding Director of the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP), Msgr. Prof. Obiora Ike, has called for deeper constructive engagement between government and faith-based institutions in addressing Nigeria’s growing economic, security, and governance challenges.
He made the remarks during a televised discussion on Afia TV, following a closed-door meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), which has sparked national debate. The conversation has also drawn reactions after comments by Cardinal John Onaiyekan and the Presidency’s response regarding the confidentiality of the meeting.
Msgr. Prof. Ike stressed that leaders must be open to sound counsel, noting that “the president must listen to good advice and have the courage to act on it.” He emphasised that dialogue between political leaders and the Church should focus on solutions that promote national stability, democratic accountability, and public trust.
The discussion further explored the role of religious leaders in speaking out on national issues affecting citizens, particularly in areas of governance, justice, and social cohesion.
He concluded by urging continued engagement between the Church and the state, stating that such dialogue is essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring responsive leadership in a time of national challenges.
